Learning to Be Emptied
One of the challenges to "becoming nothing" is our propensity to avoid being emptied of anything. Because of our sinful nature, being emptied does not come naturally, but we also can't be filled with Christ if our hearts and minds are crowded with nonessential stuff.
I think if we are honest, most of us are hoarders of some kind, it’s the only way we can explain, attics and storage units overflowing with things we quickly forget we even have. We are hoarders with our stuff, with our feelings, with our anxiety; clinging tightly to our stuff and our feelings, saving for a rainy day that rarely comes.
What we need is a good purge, so we can be filled with Jesus and his kingdom. God is the God of re-supply but he cannot fill a vessel that has no room left for his goodness. We are called to be emptied and then trust the one who fills us time and time again.
